Firefly

Mentalist - Jane coy
First of all, new comic is up and in full-color. I must say, it's almost completely different from how I intended it to be, and Zubic surprised me with what he wanted to say. He's even a little bit scaring me. Eheh. I'm not entirely sure what he's going to do next..

Also, Keenspace is officially changing its name to Comic Genesis. Just FYI. I expect they'll change my address to http://dreamlikedestiny.comicgenesis.com - I tried it, and at this point, it reroutes to the original keenspace version - but I don't know any other details.

In the meantime.. Ian brought over his DVDs of the Joss Whedon show "Firefly" - the series upon which that new movie "Serenity" is based - and we watched the first episode. Let me tell you. It. is. sweet. I'm not going to compare it to Stargate, because I don't like to compare apples and oranges, but it's way cool. Intriguing cast of compelling characters (including the redhead from "A Knight's Tale", which amuses me greatly), interesting worldbuilding (especially the contrasting sci-fi and western-ish setting!), and a complex plot that I can't wait to delve into. They started showing it on Sci-Fi a couple weeks ago, but this way I can watch it without commercials, and without waiting a week between episodes.

And I'm especially excited that "Serenity" is only rated PG-13, so I can actually go see it!!

PS~ I'm thinking I want a website of my own, for potentially professional illustration purposes, if it's not too expensive. How does one go about that? The buying-a-website part, I mean.. As far as the building-a-website part, we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

LOL! It's a self-imposed rule: I don't see rated R movies. For the most part, I don't feel I'm missing out much, but those I really do want to see, I usually just wait until they're on TV or rent them from a movie editing company. There's just so much smut out there that I don't care to pollute my mind with. :)

I've been thinking about this for a while.

I don't often go to the movie theather, so if this is just your way of saving money, more power to you :-)

That said, I think universally not seeing rated-R films is silly. If you don't want to see films with sexual themes, they nicely provide you a break-down of what makes it 'R'.

I can think of a zillion really excellent movies that are rated R and have little or no sex in them:

Donnie Darko
Terminator (and T2)
Gladiator
Lost in Translation (there was a brief scene in a strip club)
The Green Mile
The Shawshank Redemption
Clerks
Good Will Hunting
all of the Matrix movies (ok the second one had some hot action)
The Professional
Saving Private Ryan
Air Force One
Braveheart (some boobs, I think that's it)
An Officer and a Gentleman
The Breakfast Club
Eraser

and if that doesn't convince you, there is one other film that was rated R:

Passion of the Christ

Well, maybe "smut" wasn't as all-encompassing a word as I was looking for. There's a lot more about not seeing 'R' movies than just sex, though that's a big one. But they usually give them an 'R' rating for a reason, and those reasons are why I don't see them (and there are a lot of non-'R' movies and a lot of anime I won't see, either, for the same reasons). Among these reasons are profanity, nudity, suggestive or vulgar humor, realistic or excessive violence, blood and gore, or generally things that will make me feel bad (like horror movies). It's true that some of those movies have touching stories, teach good morals, or are just dang cool, but they're not so important that I can't wait to see them with the content edited.

Why? One of our articles of faith states that "if there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things." I try to fill my life with only good things as much as possible, and it's helped me keep grounded when otherwise I might feel lost in the torrential river that is the world. I know who I am, I know where I want to go, and without crowding myself with filth, I have an easier time seeing how to get there.

As for The Passion, I never had any desire to see it. I take my faith very seriously, and though I'm sure the creators of the film took great care to put their best into it, I feel that my testimony of Christ grows better through sincere prayer and scripture study than anything else.
